As I've often said, not so much around these parts where I'm reltatively new, but when Roy Jones isn't talking about Roy Jones, he's a pretty insightful broadcaster/analyist. Last night reminded me of the start of his days at the HBO Mic......when he was still accomplishing things in the Ring, and didn't need to use his position to pet his own Ego for the things he wasn't accomplishing in the Ring any longer due to questionable opposition choices (which HBO also shared some blame for by overpaying him for suspect mandatories).
I know it was just a one time thing last night, and I also realize that if given the job on a permanent basis then we might see the return of the constant mention of "Roy", but I really think that the downturn in his Ring career might just have brought back the insightful Roy and not the narcissitic jerk. When he said after the knee injury that Cotto's corner might want to be more liberal in their use of Water (thus giving Miguel the opportunity to try to work Yuri into it), you gotta admit, that was pretty sharp.

I thought he did just fine but I always like him. I never had the problem with him talking about "Roy" ... part of the reason I didn't like Lennox is he would bad mouth other fighters to make himself look better ... I have never heard Roy do that.

Mike- It's been so long now that I can't remember specific examples of what I'm talking about, but I do recall that it seemed to increase as more people started to fault him for his opponent selection. My biggest problem with Lennox was that he was simply an Lazy Broadcaster, there wasn't a single card he worked on Boxing After Dark where I thought he'd done ANY preperation. That's the minimum I expect from my analyist, is to be familiar with who's fighting and their strength and weaknesses, but many times he acted as if this was the first time he'd ever seen them.

when i watched the replay last night, did I hear Jones say how his corner would have poured extra water on the canvas in between rounds if they had an opponent with a bad knee so they could make him slip more? LOL
I thought JOnes was more subdued than he used to be and I didnt hate him as much as usual on the mic

BC didn't exactly agree with us, Davema. I thought Roy did a pretty good job of not referencing himself on Saturday, but maybe I'm giving him too much credit.....or simply comparing it to those last days of his HBO contract when he made "Roy" the star of every telecast. BC and I don't disagree very often, but on this Roy vs. Lennox issue, we're WAY apart on BOTH guys.

I would prefer him to Roy anyday, but Roy did much better this time out than I remember him doing before. Remember, I am not a Jones fan at all, in or out of the ring, so my opinion is most likely biased

Davema- My problem with Lennox was that he always seemed like he'd just flown in for the fight minutes before going on the air, and didn't seem to be very familiar with the fighters he was covering. But BC is RIGHT in that he seldom mentioned his own career. I also don't think he was helped at all by Lampley, who made for a very poor Double Play partner in setting him up.

i hear you Murph. I think we can all agree that Lampley's time has come. I think he has served his time and should be replaced. He is just to bitter for me. ...The pompous ass!

I thought Lennox mentioned his own career all the time ... esp. when putting down other fighters ... I guess we all hear what we want to hear LOL

True, Mike, perhaps we're more sensitive to it when you don't care much for the guy to begin with. I know the All Time WORST I ever heard at bringing up his own career was Bobby Czyz when he was on Showtime. Especially after he fought Holyfield in '96 and then Evander was a late Ninties regular on Showtime soon after. Jeez, you needed a calculator to count the number of times "when I fought Evander" came out of his mouth. But then I mentioned that to some people who liked Czyz, and they acted like they were surprised.........

In fairness to Bobby, he DID have to work with Pacheco, who I think most people recognized as unbearable to listen to and verging on senility by the time Showtime FINALLY gave him the Boot.

Davema- The funny thing was that other than that annoying habit of bringing up his own sagging career, at least most of the time he usually did it to make a specific point other than himself and I thought Bobby Czyz was a pretty sharp analyist.
