Just got back from the Hall of Fame, and had a great time meeting up with many old friends. But once again Ed Brophy seemed to hide the boxers away from the fans,so you could not get your photos signed. When fans travel from all over the USA and abroad,it gets to turn collectors off bigtime. But this year i decided not to get any thing signed, and just go around and chat to people i met on previous visits to Canastota.I met up with BillyC,and had a chat at least he was sober at the time most have been lucky to catch him early in the day.But joking apart he does a good job with his radio program, and i like his attitude he says what he thinks. And its the best $15 i have ever spent concerning boxing,i love the program and listen every day.
I missed the Parade on Sunday and went to the Bareknuckle Hall of Fame with a couple of friends. We had a great time the curator was so obliging and gave us tour of the barns, showing us every item and its history. We made a donation and as we were leaving he came up to me and handed me a handfull of original nails which he salvage from the reconstruction of the barns. So it was a very nice gesture on his part, its well worth a visit to any boxing fan to make one day.
On the Monday after the Hall Of Fame had finished we had a nice meal in Syracuse to say thanks to are USA friend we meet up with every year.As we came out of the resturant we bumped into Bonecrusher Smith,he asked if we would like to join him but we declined as we had allready eaten. He said that they are arranging a boxing night with oldtimers fighting each other,he said he was going against Tommy Morrison.I asked him about the Hall of Fame, and he was not to happy about the way boxers are treated there. He said Ed Brophy herds them around like cattle and will not let them earn a few dollars for themselves.I said the should all line up somewhere and fans would pay say $5 a signiture for each item they want signed. He agreed but said Brophy would not have it as he is not getting a cut,so it looks like some of the boxers are not happy with the current situation.
My journey to the Hall of Fame this year was nearly trouble free, apart from my baggage being opened by customs.I had in my suitcase a parcel of films i was going to post in the USA to save my friend in Chicago some postage money. They ripped my parcel to bits and when i opened my suitcase at the hotel, they had emptied my shaving gear all over my clean shirts. But i found a place which reparcelled my films and delivered them to chicago for only $18 which i thought was a great service.
But i had a great time many laughs great food great company and meeting so many nice people, hopefully i can do it next year. But with are goverment overhere killing us with taxes and cutbacks who knows.
