We were all set to broadcast what shaped up to be a great card in Tampa this past weekend.
First-time promoter, Jerry Estrada met the same issues most "newbies" do out of the gate. The "bottom-feeders" jumped on him like sharks and by the time the weigh-in was held, Jerry had five bouts...which worked fine for the Florida State commission...but it was the min. amount of rounds and fights for a sanctioned fight....but all was fine.
There was one hitch. One of the fighter's meds were "lost" by the commission and the fighter had to get proof the day of the fight, which she failed to do. As a result, 1/2 hour before the broadcast was to begin, the commisson pulled the plug.
Most promoters would have not only left the arena, they would have left the State and the sport. Jerry Estrada did not. Instead, Jerry addressed all of the fighters and paid them...not as per the Florida comission rules, which was half of their contracted purse, but in full. He also refunded the SOLD OUT crowd of over 1500 people on the spot.
It didn't end there. Jerry WILL be back. In May. He told me how much he learned by this and the type of people he refuses to associate himself with in the future.
In a sport that sees way too many one and done wanna-bee promoters, Jerry Estrada is a breath of fresh air. This guy is a class act and I for one will support him 100%.
As boxing fans...please take a minute to drop him an email commending him on his actions. We NEED more promoters like him in this business and I certainly hope more rip a page from his book.

Thanks,
