We've had gay fighters before, most notably Emile Griffith, but their sexual preference wasn't known during their career. Now for the first time in my memory we have a case of a rated contender who's openly gay as WBO #4 Featherweight Orlando Cruz has "come out of the closet". It will be interesting to see how the boxing community reacts to this, especially behind closed doors. I'm hopeful that he's treated like any other fighter and neither castigated for being gay or the opposite and given a title shot/big opportunity that he might not otherwise deserve. He might be the first, but he won't be the last, let's hope boxing reacts like I hope it would.
