My best friend for 50years Derek O!Dell who has written books and articles on boxing for many years.Phoned me a few years ago and told me ex boxer Ricky Porter was putting a show on in Bristol, and wanted him to write the program contents. He said to Derek also come and report the show for Boxing News the weekly boxing paper.Derek agreed and said to Ricky can i bring Dave along,Ricky agreed as he new me quite well.
On the day of the show we drove down to Bristol to meet up with Ricky,he told us two seats was set for us in the press section.Well this is when it became a comedy show, even today i have to chuckle to myself over the whole incident. The first fight got underway and it was a very entertaining contest, when the final bell sounded thats when the fun began.Derek looked at me and said what happened i got so engrossed i have nothing written down. But redfaced he told me he did not have a pen or paper anyway, and i did not either. Can you imagine two guys walking round ringside asking other reporters if they had a spare pen and paper,or should i say two budding reporters.Well we scribbled a few lines which seemed to cover the bout we had just watched, and the report did end up in Boxing News the following week. The best laugh was when Ricky Porter phoned us the following week and thanked us for a job well done.
But i got Brownie points off the wife,i purchased the video of the show which in them days the Eurosport commentator use to do it to earn a few Pounds. My wife watched it and laughed at me and Derek sitting in the press rows looking very redfaced. But the wife was pleased not once did i oglee the ringcard girls, well which bits were videod anyway.
On the drive back home its a wonder we did not crash the car we laughed so much at our inexperence at being reporters. But being best friends we blamed each other, but seeing he is older than me i explained he had to take the full blame.
